DRAMATIC AMBIENT & DOWNTEMPO WITH A SPRINKLING OF CLASSICS FROM A DANCE MUSIC ICON.

Breakout star of the 90s progressive house scene, breakbeat aficionado and one of Australia’s most successful underground dance music exports, Anthony Pappa is a true icon. We are thrilled and humbled to have him join the Lazydaze series.

When Melbourne first went into lockdown last year you fully embraced live DJ streaming. How have you found the experience? Has it been enjoyable and did you approach the live streams any differently to how you’d approach a normal DJ set in a club?

Prior to Covid l had never done a live stream so it was a huge learning curve. The first few l did were very stressful to be honest. I found them a lot more difficult than my usual preparation for a gig. The music element was never an issue but getting the right visual set up and cameras working with online technology was a whole new world for me. As l did more and more streams they got easier and easier. I have done over 60 to date and they have been really well received with some of them getting views of over 1.5 million. My streams have varied from new music to classics to down tempo to vinyl sets as well as digital.

What was the idea behind your Lazydaze mix? Was there a concept or certain sound you were aiming for?

The name Lazydaze kind of says it all. The concept of the mix was to go for a more chilled ambient style set. Something that l wouldn’t normally play in a club.

The INXS remix is a lovely moment! Does that track hold any significance for you? Or INXS in general?

No, not at all! I really like this version of “Tear Us Apart”, this was the perfect time to use it in a mix. For my overseas listener’s l wanted to use this track being an Australian DJ using an iconic track from my country.

Going way back to 2004….your Balance 006 compilation is one of our favourites! What are your reflections and memories of making those mixes? When did you last listen to it?

l actually can’t remember when the last time that l played it. What’s special to me about that album is that l had done a disc full of breakbeats. I have mixed 17 compilation albums to date and l am very proud of all of them.

It’s Sunday afternoon in the Pappa household. What kind of music is playing?

Without naming any specific artists or bands mostly a varied selection of both. Definitely electronic tunes and the style can vary from down tempo to club tunes, depending on what the mood is or who l have over at the house to share the moment with.
