A perfectly crafted hour of melodic downbeat & sombre electronica.

Having released productions on the likes of Sasha’s Last Night On Earth and James Zabiela’s Born Electric labels, Welsh producer Jody Barr displays his chilled side with a stellar mix for the Lazydaze series.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey into electronic music. When did you first discover it and what drove you to start making it? Electronic music was in some form always on in the household as a kid. If my Mum didn’t have Donna Summer on, Dad had Peter Gabriel on. I guess it was a natural progression. I discovered the more modern underground side of it via my eldest brother, as he was an avid raver and into the whole Cream, Sasha, Oakenfold movement through the 90’s.

In terms of making it, I was more into the whole ‘sound for the moving image’ when I was younger. It never really crossed my mind making an underground club track, but it’s just evolved into what it is now.

Sasha is one of your major influences. What is it that you find inspiring about his career? A 30 year career is a testament to his character and artistry. DJs and music now are both so ‘throw away’ - here today, gone tomorrow with only marginal impact on someone’s life.  What he does is indicative of the joy he brings fans both young and old. He never stands still and keeps raising the bar for us younger generation follow.

How did you decide to approach your Lazydaze mix? Are there any particularly special tracks or moments in there for you? Creating a mix like this is always thought provoking (for me, anyway). It’s nice to share my more ambient/electronica side that people wouldn’t normally hear from me. I tried to give a balanced presentation of a bunch of different emotions that I feel define who I am and the essence of my reality. Music is the best way to do that.

Each track inspires me in a different way. I wanted continuity through the mix and that balance between the more deeper/dubby stuff and the more melodic.  The first track is a favourite. I wanted to set the tone right for the mix and it has this beautiful rich organic texture.

How and where was it recorded? It was recorded via Ableton at my new studio I recently finished in the heart of Wales.

What is your all time favourite chill out… You can’t ask me that! There’s way too many to choose from!

Track: Zero 7 – Destiny / Leftfield – Melt

LP: Jean-Michel Jarre – Oxygene

Mix Comp: Ok, you got me!

What’s coming up for you in 2020? Any new releases on the boil? Head down in the studio constantly pushing forward. Not sure if I’m allowed to announce these releases yet, but either way…my biggest releases to date will be happening this year so I’m excited to what the future will materialise.
